FAQ: Honey Hex: A Game Of Exploration For 1+ Players

What inspired you to write this game?

I’d been thinking about making a Carta game for a while, but no theme really jumped at me until I read Cleo Coyle’s Honey Roasted, a terrific mystery novel (with tons of recipes!) that centers on urban beekeeping. The descriptions of honey inspired me to pair Carta with my own Six Elements Universe to design a bee-themed game played on a hex map of cards laid out by the player, as their Royal Messenger character attempts to travel from the landing point to the capitol of the foreign Queen with their precious cargo.

Why are you giving a portion of the proceeds to NWF.org?

I’ve always appreciated the natural world, and have been alarmed by the recent decline in pollinators (and only partly because I like to eat!) I knew when I was writing this game, originally for itch.io, that I wanted to direct some part of the payments I received to pollinator conservation. That, ofc, started a big old search for the most impactful fund. Other charities are more tightly focused in area or technology, but I was really taken with the way that the National Wildlife Federation works both on federal legislation & policy as well as promoting and inspiring much smaller-scale local actions. I wish there was a global program that did the same: please let me know if you find one so I can add them to my donation list!

Who did the art?

Oh, that was all me, by combining free online assets in virtual collages. I wanted to evoke the pastoral fantasies of the 20th century while adding some pulp elements as a nod to the action adventure element of the game. My palette is primarily golds, blues and browns, with the occasional splash of floral red, green and purple. I think it all came out quite well.

What kind of packaging will you be using?

It can be surprisingly difficult to strike a balance between the environmental-friendly packaging I prize and the durability expected by anyone who’s put their hard-earned money into purchasing my books. With Equinox, I found a brand of reinforced paper mailers I really liked that customers could immediately place into their recycling without worrying about plastic innards. Since I also wanted to protect the books against possible water damage incurred in transit, I splurged a bit and bought resealable plastic sleeves to place each book into before going into the mailers: you can use it to keep your book pristine on your shelves or to store other similar items! I also used as much recyclable or repurposed material as I could, which offset by a little bit the increased packaging cost otherwise. I envision doing the same for Honey Hex and look forward to getting this book into your hands!

What ages is this appropriate for?

I would say pre-teen onward, as there’s a written reference at one point to a creature, much like a non-species-specific praying mantis, that will try to seduce and eat the characters if alerted to their presence. Some encounters will force players to fight, as one of the four Actions available to them to get out of sticky situations. Parental guidance is encouraged for younger players.

Will prices be going up after the Kickstarter ends?

Yup! There’ll be a slight increase once this closes and we head to BackerKit, then a further one once we get to retail prices, so grab this bargain (and tell your friends!) while you still can!

Did you make some quirky Instagram Stories for Honey Hex?

Sure did! I’m very much a toddler when it comes to knowing how to use Insta, but I made a few cute Stories promoting Honey Hex. Link is below if you’d like to take a look!

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
